Sophie Week 2 – 3/15 to 3/22

Well, our second week with our new sweetheart was great. We encountered a few bumps along the way, but nothing we won’t get through. Here are some of the highlights:

St. Patrick’s Day: Sophie’s first holiday was appropriately St. Patrick’s Day. We put some green beer in her bottle and she slept great! (Kidding – I’m just kidding! – Mom and Dad drank all the green beer!) So we all put on our green and took a family photo:

Visiting Nurse and Second Doctor Visit: On Wednesday we had the traveling nurse pay us a visit. She checked Sophie out and everything was great until she got on the scale:

Her weight went down to 5 lbs 9 oz, which is 4 oz less than last week. Then when we went to the doctor on Thursday the nurse put her on the scale and she weighed 7lbs. 6oz! We were excited, but didn’t really believe it, so the doctor put her on another scale and she really only weighed 5lbs 11oz. The first scale was all jacked up (apparently some toddler was messing around with it!) So the doctor gave us some ideas for how to increase Debbie’s milk, and were going to supplement her for a while until her weight comes up.

Debbie’s Family: On Wednesday Cousin Judy and her two children Jason and Carly paid us a visit to meet Sophie.  They got to hold her a little bit and then Jason read her a story while she ate some dinner.  Then Debbie’s parents arrived on late Thursday night and will be here to help us for about a month. So Sophie and Mom and Grammy went off to breast feeding support group on Friday morning. Then Friday afternoon we all got to hang out for Kevin’s last afternoon off from work.

Debbie’s Birthday: And finally we had what is now the second most important day of the year, Debbie’s Birthday. We all went to the Pacific Coast Grill for a late lunch on their outdoor patio, and Sophie was a very well behaved little girl, feeding and napping the whole time without crying at all. We made a quick stop in Del Mar for Sophie’s first trip to the beach, and then we headed home for some ice cream cake to finish off the day!

Sophie got her mama a nice locket keychain from Brighton so that mama can show her off all the time!

Sophie’s First Week

Hello!

Well we have managed to survive the first week of parenthood without any major damage (except our sleep schedule of course). Sophie is doing great. She has generally been a happy baby, eating and sleeping pretty well (except, surprise surprise, she doesn’t like to sleep between 1am and 6am.) I have listed a few highlights from the week below. Check out the full photo album for more details.

Going Home: On Monday we headed home from the hospital. Of course since Sophie decided to come a little early we weren’t quite ready, so I had to go out on Sunday and get a car seat. Once that little detail was taken care of we headed home. Sophie wasn’t too happy with the concept at first, but by the time we were almost home she had settled down nicely. (And every trip we’ve taken since she has been good for, so I think she likes the car.)

First Doctor’s Appointment: On Wednesday we made our first trip to the pediatrician. Sophie checked out a-ok. We were a little concerned about her weight, since she was born pretty small and lost a bit of weight in the hospital. But she gained an ounce compared to when we left the hospital, so I think we’re in good shape.

First Outing: Ok, so we didn’t go very far. But we did put Sophie in her carrying sling and went for a walk to the park by our house on Thursday. By then we had started to develop a little cabin fever and needed some fresh air. Luckily I think she likes her sling too, so she slept through the whole thing.

Doesn’t seem like much, huh? And yet some how we’re completely exhausted. I’m sure next week will be much easier!

2008-03-09 Sophie’s First Week

Treasure Discovered in San Diego!

Our beautiful daughter Sophie was born this morning.  Both baby and mother are doing great.  I will post a longer entry later describing all the details, but for now here are the key facts:

Date and Time: Born at 8:08 am on 3/8/08 

Name: Sophia Takara (We’ll call her Sophie.)

The story behind the names:  In Jewish tradition you can name a child to honor someone who has passed on by using either the whole name or the initial.  Debbie’s grandmother was Sophie.  My mother’s father was Thomas, so we took the “T” and found Takara.  Takara is a Japanese name which also means “Treasure” (For those of you who don’t know Debbie spent three years teaching in Japan)

Weight: 6 pounds 4 ounces

Length: 19 inches

I apologize for how long this post took.  I was planning on live blogging the birth but Debbie said no.   Seriously I was going to post from the hospital since they have wi-fi, but wouldn’t you know my laptop crashed on the one day I needed to use it outside the house.  Oh well, if that’s the worst problem we had all day we’re pretty lucky)
