Father’s Day

June 29, 2008

I’ve been waiting weeks for my wife to volunteer to write a long blog post talking about what a great dad I am, but since she’s been a little busy taking care of the baby I guess I’ll just have to write it myself!

Just kidding of course, but we did manage to get out of the house to have some fun on Father’s Day.  As usual, it was a beautiful sunny day here in San Diego, so we headed out to Balboa Park to walk around and get something to eat.

Here is Sophie in her I Love Daddy t-shirt (just moments before a slight “accident” that required us to switch her into her backup outfit….don’t ask, it wasn’t pretty….):

She really likes to be carried in her baby bjorn, especially facing outward where she can see the world:

We went to the Prado restaurant with the intention of just having some appitizers and a drink, but we wound up having dinner there instead (hey, ya gotta eat, right?)  It was interesting because we sat outside on the balcony and there was a wedding going on right below us.  And once again we kept ourselves entertained with a running commentary on various aspects of the ceremony.

Finally, since it’s Father’s Day and I can do whatever I want, here are some cute pictures of Sophie:

Sophie’s New Friends

June 29, 2008

Well, it’s true.  My 16-week old daughter has a much more active social life than I do.  She spends her days out on the town, going out to lunch, going to the movies, shopping at Nordstroms and meeting with her friends for playdates.  Where do I sign up?

Here is a picture of Sophie with her friend Haley.  She and Debbie went over to Haley’s house to hang out with her and her mom Keri.

On a different day Sophie was hanging out with her friends Jake and Lauren.  Here is a picture of the three of them:

Gee I can’t wait till she gets to high school.  If anyone needs me I’ll be at the office. 😦

Here are the rest of the photos:

Fiesta Del Sol

June 27, 2008

On June 7th we went up to Temecula to meet Joy and Rich for dinner and a little wine tasting.  They have a membership at the Ponte winery they wanted to renew (I couldn’t remember if I had been to Ponte before until we got inside, and then it all came back to me.)  The restaurant at the winery was very nice (although the gnocchi was a little weak).  Someone was having their wedding there at the same time we were having dinner, so we entertained ourselves by critiquing the guests fashion choices.

On Sunday we headed up to Solana Beach for the Fiesta Del Sol:

It’s basically just a street fair with the usually vendor booths, rides, music and food of questionable nutritional value (mmmmm deep-fried twinkies!).  Of course the fact that it’s right at the beach is a nice bonus:

Sophie spent most of the afternoon napping in her stroller, so we bought her a cute hat:

Lake Miamar

June 15, 2008

On June 1 we decided it was too nice a day to be cooped up inside, so we broke out the jogging stroller and went over and walked around Lake Miramar.  The lake is about 5 miles around and there are several nice picnic areas overlooking the lake.  After 9/11 they closed off the path over the dam, so you could no longer walk the full loop arond the lake, but they have recently reopened it so you can do the full loop.

On a separate subject, on May 30 I had to fly to Santa Fe, NM for work. We wound up flying out and back on the same day, which was brutal but at least I was home with my family instead of stuck in some hotel on Friday night.

Here is a picture of the sunset in Tucson which I watched out the airplane window as we stopped on our way back to San Diego.

Stop, it’s the Police!

June 15, 2008

The band that is.  On May 26th we managed to get out for our first real night away from Sophie since she was born.  I had gotten Debbie concert tickets to the Police back on our anniversary in April.  Our good friends Kandice and Mike live down by the concert venue and agreed to look after our little treasure while we were at the show.

The trip to the show was the standard traffic and parking hassle, and the drinks were ridiculously over-priced, but at least they give you plenty:

The opening act was Elvis Costello, who put on a decent show, although it was tough to see since it was still light out and the video screens weren’t bright enough to compensate.  Sting came out and sang one song with Elivs, which was pretty cool.  Although it took a few minutes to realize it was him since he has grown out this scruffy grey beard and looks a little like the guy asking for loose change at the intersection down by my office.

The Police played all of their classics in a really good show.  Nothing out of the ordinary, but I don’t think the crowd would have been very happy if Sting got up to the mike and said “Were going to play a few songs off of Stewart Copeland’s new solo album…..”

All things considered it was a great show and it was great to be able to go out as grown ups again for a change, but we did miss our little Sophie (She on the other hand was sleeping quite soundly when we got back!)

Thanks again Kandice and Mike, we’ll be happy to repay the favor someday 😉

Sophie’s New Bed

June 15, 2008

Well, it seems like she just got here, but we decided it’s time for Sophie to grow up and move into her big girl bed.  Ok, so maybe it’s just her crib that we finally got setup, but it was still quite traumatic for Debbie to move her from the cradle to the crib.

But she has done really well in there since we moved her, so we have already gotten rid of the cradle.  (And Debbie doesn’t seem to mind all of the extra room in our bedroom with it gone!)

And special thanks to Grampy (and Auntie Karen) for making the letters for Sophie’s name hanging on the wall.  They look great!

2008-05-26 Joy Graduation

June 8, 2008

Our friend (and Debbie’s co-worker) Joy finished her Master’s degree at San Diego State (woo hoo!) and had a little graduation party to celebrate. The party was at her parent’s house up in Rancho Bernardo. Here is the view from their backyard:

And here is Debbie carrying Sophie in her sling:

Finally, when we got home we put Sophie to sleep in her new bed:

(Just kidding of course, but Sophie does have a new bed. More on that in a future post!)
