Rollin at the Zoo

July 27, 2008

On July 20th we met up with Patty, Warren and their son Matthew and Kelly, Carl and their daughter Addison to go to the Zoo.  Sophie is a zoo regular by now, in fact she had just been there earlier in the week with Debbie and some of the other baby group moms.  Here are the kids lined up in their strollers waiting to go in:

Here’s Sophie doing her best impression of an 80-year old grandma:

Kelly, Carl and Addison have a little lunch:

And Matthew has his lunch too:

They do this cool new thing at the zoo now.  At the front part of the zoo near the flamingos they take a cage of Macaws up about 30 feet high over the crowds.  Then they open the cage and the Macaws swoop down and fly all the way across the front area of the zoo, then fly off back to their exhibit.  Pretty cool to watch, and amazing they don’t just fly away.

We also spent time at reptile mesa, gorilla tropics, flamingo lagoon and hippo beach.

After the Zoo we went down to see Kandice and Mike.  It seems like we just saw them, but I guess it was actually the end of May when we went to see the Police.  They were amazed at how much Sophie has grown since then.  I guess seeing her every day it’s harder to notice how much she has changed.

Here’s Sophie in her new chair.  It’s great because she can sit up all by herself in it.  She really seems to like it.  (Thanks Joan Marie!)

She can even sit at the table with us now.

And, as always, I’ll leave you with some cute pictures of Sophie.

Video Posts

July 27, 2008

I’m trying to figure out a good way to share video over the blog.  Let me know how these work:

Matthew and Patty at the Del Mar Fair.

Nicholas playing in the pool on the Forth of July.

Samantha eating her birthday cake. And making a mess.

Samantha’s Birthday

July 27, 2008

One of Sophie’s new friends Samantha had her first birthday party on July 12th.  Most of the usual suspects were there including Keri and Haley

Joan Marie, Mike and Matthew

Shannon and Julia

and Elizabeth, Joe and Nicholas (strangely I don’t have any pictures of them.  I do have some good video clips of Nicholas jumping around but I haven’t quite figured out the best way to share video online yet).  It was nice to see them at a party that they weren’t hosting, although Joe couldn’t resist running the grill.

And of course Samantha was there.  She got strapped into her high chair and was given her own piece of birthday cake to eat/demolish.  She managed to make a bit of a mess:

4 month doctor’s appointment

July 27, 2008

I have to go to the doctor again?!?!?! BLEEEAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

On July 8, our little peanut had her 4 month doctor’s well baby checkup. Can you believe she is four months old!?!? Our doctor was very happy with Sophie’s health and progress. Sophie weighed 11 pounds, 6 ounces and was 23 inches long. 10th %tile for both her weight and height. She is tiny, but continues to grow in a healthy way. Sophie got her shots again. I think the hardest part is when she looks right at you and begs with her eyes, “why are you letting her do this to me?” and then the crying that starts with no sound. She cried so hard and of course, then I cried. Thank goodness Kevin is there to comfort both of us.

The whole experience was too much for our Little Miss Sophie, she slept for most of the day.

4th of July

July 27, 2008

I decided to help my husband catch up on our blogging…so I’m writing. Hopefully, I will have the same humor as Kevin does.

Our friends Elizabeth and Joe decided at the last minute that they had to throw a party for the Fourth of July. (See this past post for their last party). So we dressed Sophie up in her patriotic red, white and blue outfit that Nana gave her (actually, she gave it to her for Memorial Day, but Sophie was still too tiny to wear it then.) and headed over to the party.

Since their son Nicholas was born at the end of October, their circle of friends consists of many of the same group of new parents that I have met in my baby group. So, as usual in our new world, there were about 20 kids under the age of one there (ok, maybe it was just five, but it seemed like 20!). And as usual Sophie just sat back and watched the chaos. I think she needs a few more months before she jumps into the fray.

For a different perspective, check out this post from Elizabeth’s blog. She seem to think Kevin makes parenting look easy. I couldn’t agree more! 😉

On Saturday, we went up to San Marcos to see our friends Teri and Tom. We just spent a nice relaxing evening at their house, checking out their beautifully renovated bathroom, grilling some steaks and letting Sophie (and Me!) get our puppy time in!

Sophie Day Care

July 26, 2008

In July Debbie had to go back to work (two days a week for three weeks, six days total). So Sophie got to go spend those days with Auntie Niki, Courtney and Luke. They had all kinds of fun singing songs, running errands and learning new things. Thanks so much for taking such good care of our little peanut!

Amber Comes Home

July 26, 2008

Our friend Amber has been living up in San Luis Obispo for the last couple of years studying at Cal Poly SLO. She finished her classes in June and now she’s moving back to San Diego for her internship. She and our other friend Genny are going to be roommates (again!), so she came down to San Diego at the end of June so they could look for apartments. While she was here, her and Genny came over so that Amber could meet Sophie:

Amber will be moving back down to San Diego for good in August, and we can’t wait for her to get here. (and not just so we can hit her up for free babysitting!)

Del Mar Fair

July 26, 2008

Ok, so technically it’s now the “San Diego County Fair”, but everyone still calls it the Del Mar Fair. The fair runs every year from mid-June until the fourth of July. This year we headed over there on June 28th with our friends Patty and Warren and their son Matthew. (Debbie met Patty at her breast-feeding support group and they have become good friends.)

We decided to head over there around dinner time. We figured that by then the sun would be down, some parking would open up and (with any luck) the kids would fall asleep in their strollers as we wandered around. Our plan worked out for the most part. We did get some reasonable parking spaces and the weather had cooled off nicely. Unfortunately the sleep thing didn’t work out so well. Sophie did manage to sleep for a bit,

but Matthew decided he didn’t want anything to do with sleeping. I guess he was just too excited.

As you can probably imagine, since it’s tough to get on all the rides with a couple of newborns, the main draw for us this year was the food. We did try to limit the damage (we decided to pass on the deep-fried twinkies), but did have to sample the corn on the cob, bbq sandwiches, sweet-potato french fries and, of course, the funnel cakes:

In other happenings, here’s a photo from Debbie and Sophie’s baby group:

As usual, Sophie was busy taking a nap when they took the group photo:

Also, Deb and Sophie went to visit her friend Stephanie and her son William:

That’s all for this week. If you need us we’ll be at the gym working off all those calories we ate at the fair!

Simi Valley

July 13, 2008

On the weekend of June 20th we decided to go for a little drive to visit our friends Shay and Eric and their family.  They have not had a chance to meet the newest addition to our little family yet and we thought it would be a good idea to take Sophie for a little “test drive” before our flight to the east coast in August.

We left on Friday night around 7:30, thinking that we might avoid some of the traffic and maybe Sophie would nap most of the way.  Well, our plan worked out better than we could have expected.  She fell asleep shortly after we left and didn’t wake up until we stopped for dinner about halfway there.  And then after we ate our dinner Sophie ate and then not only slept until we got there, but continued to sleep until about 3am!  And as a bonus there was no traffic so it only took us about two and a half hours for the whole trip.

Here Shay and Eric each get a chance to hold our little peanut:

On Saturday we didn’t have any plans to do anything, so we just hung around their house.  (Good thing, because it was about 105 degrees outside!)  Eric turned on the sprinklers and filled up the kiddie pool for the kids.  Sophie spent about 5 minutes outside watching the festivities before deciding that she really didn’t like the heat and wanted to go back inside (like mother like daughter I guess!).

Once the sun went down we decided to stretch our legs and go for a walk around the neighborhood.

There’s a small park down the street from their house, so we decided to stop and take a group picture:

and then have a little fun:

On Sunday we headed over to Panera for a little breakfast before hitting the road:

Finally it was time to go.  Sophie was pretty good on the trip home too.  We stopped in Corona to get some lunch, and it was just ridiculously hot outside:

Since Debbie and I were both tired, we let Sophie drive the rest of the way home:

And here are some random cute Sophie pictures:
